Why is Hanuman so Popular?

Why is Hanuman so popular?

बुद्धिर् बलम् यशो धैर्यम् निर्भयत्वम् अरोगताम्अ

जाड्यम् वाक् पटुत्वम् च हनुमत् स्मरणात् भवेत्॥

“By remembering Hanuman one will be blessed with intelligence, physical strength, good reputation, courage, fearlessness, good health, absence of dullness and eloquence in speech.”

Hanuman, the ardent devotee of Rama is known for his immortality and magical powers. He is the one who flew over the sea, found Sita in Lanka and got her united with Rama.Stories are many about this Vanara deity, the powerful God who is worshipped as an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

The mighty powers of Hanuman

Anjaneya is the child of Anjana and Kesari and was born with the blessings of Lord Shiva. Named after his mother and father, he has been called Anjaneya and Kesarinandhan. He is worshipped as the son of Vayu with the name Maruthi and has magical powers to expand and contract himself, rock mountains, wield rocks, fly over seas and dart with the speed of the wind. He is an immortal being with super powers and is present even today in the place where Ramakatha is narrated.

The great devotee of Rama

Rama charitham is incomplete without a mention of Hanuman. When Rama was languishing over the separation of Sita, it is only the succor, support and commitment of Hanuman which brought relief to Rama.Hanuman acted as the messenger between Rama and Sita and handed over the finger ring sent by Rama as a token of his love for Sita.  Fanning the sparks of fear in the heart of Ravana through destroying Lanka with the fire set on his tail, Anjaneya got back to Kishkintha to initiate the first step towards Ravana Vadham by Rama.

When Lakshmana became unconscious by the nagastram of Indrajith, it was only Anjaneya, who brought Sanjeev parvatham by flying over the sea and relieved Lakshmana of the crucial predicament. Whenever we listen to or read Ramayana, our hearts jump with excitement on knowing the exciting feats conducted by Hanuman and the way he serves at the feet of Ram even today. Reading Sundara Kandam in Ramayana and performing puja at home relieves one of the sufferings he/she undergoes in life.

Hanuman Jayanthi

Hanuman Jayanthi is the birth day of Hanuman which falls on his birth star, Moolam in the month of Margazhi in the Tamil calendar. It is the Amavasya thithi and in North India, people celebrate Hanuman Jayanthi in the month of Chaitra on the Full Moon day. The devotees throng temples from the morning and apply sindhur taken from the idol of Hanuman to their foreheads. As we all know, sindhur is the favorite of Hanuman and one can find the idol of the deity immersed in sindhur. It is because Hanuman immersed his body in sindhur to seek extended life span for Rama, when he found Sita applying it to her forehead to gain longevity for Rama.

Symbolic significance of the avatar of Anjaneya

Bajranga Bali (Hanuman) is a vanara avatar. A vaanra is known for its mood swings and unpredictable acts. From the level of an animal, Hanuman has moved to a plane of thought and devotion which is par excellence, mighty and unparalleled. He has attained immortality for his bhakti and commitment to Rama.

Mind is always compared to a monkey. Its acts are unpredictable. But our minds should be shaped and disciplined (like the soul of the vanara deity) to move in the path of bhakthi, devotion and commitment to mukthi. This is what the avatar of Hanuman symbolically represents and by celebrating his Jayanthi, we should be able to carry this message to our inner selves and purify ourselves.

Goswami Tulsidas in his divine composition of Hanuman Chalisa in Braj Bhasha/ Language highlights the Phala Stuti of the Chalisa in verses 36, 37 & 39:

सङ्कट कटै मिटै सब पीरा ।

जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा ॥३६॥

One who thinks of Lord Hanuman, he/she gets relieved of all Sankat/Problems in life

जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई ।

छूटहि बन्दि महा सुख होई ॥३८॥

One who reads the Chalisa 100 times, he/she gets relieved of all bandhams of life and enjoys all bliss in life

जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा ।

होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा ॥३९॥

One who reads hanuman Chalisa regularly shall be benedicted for sure

Let us pray to Hanuman for bestowing power, strength, energy, willpower, devotion and commitment to the task taken on us since HE is the embodiment of all these virtues in life and seek the benedictions of this greatest devotee of Ram to lead us in sanmarga without giving room for ill feelings and evil thoughts.
